Your Name: Avril Thomas
Business Name: Magpie Springs
Address: 1870 Brookman Rd, Hope Forest
What does your business do? Our property is an eclectic/rustic Adelaide Hills Wine Region vineyard under restoration. We are open Friday to Sunday from 11am-5pm.
It has a Cellar Door/Art Gallery/Climbing wall and a spacious
garden to hold functions.
Our core business is wine – which we sell at the Cellar door.
We grow seven different varietals of grapes which we sell to different winemakers and make our own wine – Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Merlot.
We have pre booked wine taste and platter sessions, at which people taste the wine, choose the wine they like, then enjoy it with a platter in our cellar door or in the garden (weather permitting)
Hire of grounds:
Art Gallery: Being an artist myself I have a strong leaning to arts of all genres – painting drawing sculpture and music. This property is made for artistic endeavour!
We have held exhibitions for local, National and International artists with openings –
The gallery is available to hire for exhibitions.
Music events at Magpie Springs – They are acoustic soft rock, folk often by original song writers and musicians.
This property is well suited for artists to explore imagination and hold workshops.
Photographers and videographers have used this property as their backdrop for many shoots
have been married on our grounds. The weddings are DIY so always completely
Groups – who wish to hire the grounds for gatherings are easily catered for with our list of mobile caterers.
We are licensed and would expect our wines to be used for all functions.
Climbing at Southern Boulder.
We have had the State Climbing Championships here at Magpie Springs twice – it is an Olympic Sport.
$10pp – safety rules apply
The wall is often booked by school, cubs, scouts, sports, youth groups and corporate team bonding days.
We are right in the middle of the Fleurieu halfway between Adelaide and Victor Harbor. This central location is ideal for folk to meet.
We purchased the property in 2013 and have been restoring its 80 acres since. It is a work in progress. Magpie Springs has some of the oldest vines in the southern Adelaide Hills Wine Region. Whilst it was called Magpie Springs before, with us it has started a new chapter.
Your business journey:
- We are not newcomers to the Fleurieu as we lived in Myponga and near Port Elliot when we were first married.
- The property itself needed extensive restoration and needed people with a certain set of skills.
- Prior to coming to Magpie Springs Steve Thomas had his own building business before this, he built McCracken Golf course and ran Victor Harbor Holiday Centre.
- I was a full time practicing artist specializing in portraiture (hand painted or drawn). She has works in National, corporate and private collections in Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, Europe and USA. And has shown in Major exhibitions both in South Australia and Nationally.
What business lessons have you learned? Magpie Springs has been a whole new learning curve! – Wine making, Viticulture, Tourism, Hospitality, staging and organizing functions.
