What does your business do? Part of Things is a space to bring new ideas to life. It is an experimental gathering place inspired by DIY culture, contemporary & experimental art, entrepreneurial thinking, community service and a ferocious pursuit of “how could this be better?” Our vision is that when people think of the Riverland, they think quirky and creative experiences in the same way that when people think of Melbourne, they think of fancy coffee. Our mission is to nurture a creative and connected generation of doers in the Riverland region of South Australia. We organise projects, events, gatherings, meetings, workshops, mentoring and everything in between to achieve this mission. We present quirky, unique and memorable experiences created and curated by Riverland artists and thinkers: audio walking tours, immersive theatre, collaborative writing projects, video game jams, intimate concerts and creative based workshop tasters. Part of Things is the only hub in the Riverland dedicated to (for, with, by) the generation currently in their 20s and 30s. Our space and programming reflects the specific tastes, interests and aspirations of Riverlanders looking for weird, wonderful and quirky experiences. We operate from Hawdon Chambers on the main-street of Barmera and make our space available for hire, as well as offering co-working desks. Part of Things is a small business embracing self-help, self-responsibility, collaboration, curiosity, courage and creativity. Our programming is variously-scaled, responsive to identified needs and interests, and always evolving. We close up programming over the hot Riverland summer and kick back into gear over March – November. We are unashamedly focused on Riverland tastes, interests, ideas and futures in everything we do.

What area do you serve? The Riverland region of South Australia (though we also consult and collaborate on projects with other communities).

How long have you been in business? Part of Things has been operating since July 2019, but I have been in business as a sole trader under my own name (Alysha Herrmann) since 2009 creating and delivering artistic and community projects.

Did you found the business? Yes

Please provide some dot points about your business journey:

  • The idea behind Part of Things was initiated in 2018 (though the seeds of it had been germinating for a couple of years before that) and brought to life in 2019. We launched with a midnight pyjama party in August 2019. Since then we’ve delivered board game nights, visual art exhibitions, creative workshops, gatherings, community meetings, a Thinker in Residence program and a custom projection artwork for the Berri Barmera Council.
  • I’m an award-winning writer, theatre-maker, creative producer and community organiser in my own right and have been operating as a sole trader since 2009.
  • Part of Things is the next step in nurturing and contributing to my community.

Name two things you’ve learned from your business journey?

  • Slow and steady suits me better.
  • Not everything needs to be scalable to be valuable.

Why did you join the Women in Business Network? To support and collaborate with other women in business.
